Knee discomfort has many possible causes. Learn what an evaluation may include and what information can help you prepare.

Knee pain can affect walking, work, exercise, and everyday routines. Because discomfort may have different causes, an evaluation is a useful place to start understanding what is going on.

What may be discussed?
A clinician may ask when symptoms began, what activities change them, and whether you have had prior injuries or treatment. An evaluation may include a review of your history and an examination appropriate to your concerns.

What should you bring?
• A list of symptoms and when they occur
• Relevant imaging or medical records, if available
• A list of medications and questions you want answered

Seek urgent medical care for severe symptoms, a major injury, inability to bear weight, or a sudden change in your condition. This article is educational and does not replace advice from your clinician.
